The strip in order
1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 45, 47, 49.
Twenty-five cards. The first five are 1, 3, 5, 7, 9. The last card is 49. Counted backward the strip runs 49, 47, 45 and on down to 1.
The first ten cards, the shorter run, are 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19.
Cover and continue
Any three cards may be hidden. The counter is right when the number said at a covered card is the one printed under it. Lifting the cover settles it.
Two common slips: saying the next card's number at the cover and then repeating it when the cover is passed, and skipping the covered card in silence.

From the 21 moon snails: 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 45, 47, 49.

Read for
A close count gives one number word to one card, keeps the finger moving on every word, and lands on 49 exactly. A loose count runs ahead of the finger, or lets two words fall on one card, or drifts into counting by ones near the teen numbers.
Counting on is the harder job. A close response starts at the named number and keeps the jump of two; a loose response slides back to 1 first, which is the thing this step is meant to retire.
