Use a root word to determine the meaning of an unknown word with the same root (e.g., company, companion). d. Use print and digital reference materials to determine or clarify meaning of words and phrases.

Students determine meanings of three unfamiliar or Italian words using specific nearby context clues from the scrapbook.

LESSON SEQUENCE
- 1.Passage 9 vocabulary Use the scrapbook spread where Zoe Sophia writes Italian words with
their meanings beside them. Students copy one word/phrase and the exact nearby explanation that unlocks it.
- 2.The reward notice Use the typed notice with the Italian for 'reward' printed prominently.
Students infer the word’s meaning from what the notice is trying to accomplish.
- 3.The 'found' entry Use the entry headed with the Italian for 'found.' Students connect the heading
to the gondolier arriving with Mickey.
- 4.Name the clue type For each row, students label the clue: direct explanation, purpose of the
notice, or event in the entry.

- Names a specific clue beside or around each unfamiliar term.
- Explains meaning from context rather than prior knowledge alone.
