All These Combinations: The Sentence That Ties a Page Together A Dollar, a Penny, How Much and How Many? - Grade 1 - Short lesson

TIME

OBJECTIVE

PRODUCT

9 minutes Identify the sentence that states what the whole page is about and restate that idea without repeating the shopper details. One oral main-idea sentence beginning, “This page shows …” Essential question: Which sentence tells what the whole page is showing?

Materials

  • The book
  • Prepared excerpt printed in this lesson
  • Student response materials Text to mark
  • shopper paragraph - the four-sentence passage ending “All these

combinations …” Prepared text Jenny brought four quarters while ten dimes came with her brother.

Anna paid 100 pennies taken from her mother. Zach hands over seven dimes, one quarter plus five pennies. All these combinations prove to be the same as Jennies.

Lesson sequence

1 Find the sentence that sums the page up - 5 min Read the shopper paragraph aloud. Have students point to the last sentence, the one that talks about all three shoppers together, and say what it tells about them. 2 Say the page in one sentence - 4 min Reread the paragraph. Have students restate the whole page without naming any shopper, beginning: “This page shows …”

Teacher key

The final sentence is the summing-up sentence because it refers back to all three shopper examples.

A valid restatement says that the page shows different combinations that come to the same amount, without having to repeat the individual shoppers. Support & extension

Support:
Read the paragraph and echo only the last sentence. Point to combinations and ask whether the sentence is about one shopper or all of them. Extension: Ask why the writer puts the general claim last, after the three shopper examples, instead of first.

Assessment

  • Points to the final sentence as the sentence that sums up the page
  • Explains that the sentence refers to all three shopper examples

page 1

  • Restates the page idea without listing the shoppers
