- Prepared excerpts printed in this lesson
- Pointing finger or pencil Text to mark
- Opening - “Help Sebastian add” and “Look for the answers …”
- Monkey page - “Look up!”
- Ending - “Now you know. Good work! You help Sebastian …”
Prepared text Lucky Sebastian Pig. Today, he is going to the circus. He has a big job to do. Help Sebastian add. Need help? Look for the answers in Sebastian's notebook. Monkeys show off. Look up! Three monkeys show off. Four more monkeys come in. They flip and fly. Now you know. Good work! You help Sebastian add all of the animals. Use this chart to practice more addition facts.
Lesson sequence
1 Find the sentences that are talking to you - 5 min Read the opening and monkey excerpts. Have students point to a sentence in each that talks straight to the reader and say what it asks the reader to do. 2 Read the book's last words to you - 4 min Read the ending. Have students say what the book says the reader did and who the word you means.
Teacher key
Examples of reader-directed sentences include “Help Sebastian add,” “Look for the answers,” and “Look up!” At the ending, you means the reader. Support & extension
- Support:
- Find the word Help and echo the sentence it starts. Ask what that sentence asks the reader to do. Extension: Explain how a command such as “Look up!” can have an understood subject you even though the word is not printed.
