- Prepared excerpts printed in this lesson
- Sound-word cards Text to mark
- Clown passage - “Zip, zoom” and “Hong, hong”
- Bear passage - “Uh-oh” before the bear falls
Prepared text Zip, zoom, clowns. Hong, hong. A clown zooms into the ring. He goes around and around. Three more clowns drive in. Sebastian writes it all down. What is that bear doing? High above the ground, she turns on her toes. Uh-oh, the bear is falling.
Lesson sequence
1 Read the words that are noises, not names - 5 min Read the clown passage aloud, making a real noise for the noisy parts. Have students point to the sound words and say what each one comes from. 2 Find a sound word that is a feeling too - 4 min Read the bear passage. Have students say “Uh-oh” in the voice the moment calls for and explain what feeling the word carries.
Teacher key
Zip and zoom suggest quick circus motion; hong imitates a horn-like sound. Uh-oh works as a short sound-like expression and also carries alarm or worry about the falling bear. Support & extension
- Support:
- Echo “Zip, zoom” and “Hong, hong” after the teacher and make a matching noise or motion for each. Extension: Explain how the small expression “Uh-oh” can both sound like something a person says and carry a feeling at the same time.
