- Prepared excerpts printed in this lesson Text to mark
- Morning - marbles before class
- Lunch - the Penguin's race
- Going home - Mathis carries the treasure
Prepared text Mathis arrives early at school so he can play marbles with Lou and Ella before going to class. At the end of the game, everyone counts their marbles. Mom picks up Mathis for lunch. After reading, they play his favorite game, the Penguin's race. The little boy thinks penguins are so funny on their ice flows. Leaving school, Mathis is very proud to show to his mother the treasure he won with his friends. A picture of dragons and magicians to color.
Lesson sequence
1 Read the morning and put it first - 4 min Read the morning passage aloud and say what Mathis does before class. Place it on the strip labelled First. 2 Retell the whole day in order - 5 min Read the morning, lunch, and going-home passages. Match each to First, Next, or Last, arrange the strips, and retell the day to a partner.
Teacher key
First, Mathis plays marbles before class. Next, Mom picks him up for lunch and they play the Penguin's race. Last, Mathis leaves school carrying the treasure he won with his friends. Support & extension
- Support:
- Give the three strips already labelled and ask students only to match each printed passage before saying the three events aloud. Extension: Add a fourth event from the book and explain where it belongs in the sequence.
