Follow The Honey Ace Lacewing - Bug Detective - Grade 1 - 15-20 minute lesson

TIME

OBJECTIVE

PRODUCT

20 minutes Collect mystery clues, weigh their usefulness and reliability, and decide which evidence genuinely helps solve the case. A clue table plus one judgment explaining which clue or witness should count most strongly. Essential question: Which clues really help solve the case, and which evidence should not be trusted as strongly?

Materials

  • The book
  • Clue table
  • Pencil Text to mark
  • Honey-trail clues in the mystery
  • Witness scene whose information should not be trusted as strongly
  • Later evidence that helps resolve the case

Lesson sequence

1 Collect the clues - 6 min Reread the honey-trail parts of the mystery. Record each clue separately rather than jumping straight to a conclusion. 2 Sort useful from merely interesting - 5 min For each clue, ask what claim it supports. Mark clues that actually narrow the case and leave unrelated details unmarked. 3 Judge the witness - 5 min Return to the witness whose account should not be trusted as strongly. Compare that account with the other evidence and explain why it deserves less weight. 4 Make the case - 4 min Choose the clue or combination of clues that best supports the solution and explain why it is stronger than the unreliable evidence.

Teacher key

A strong response distinguishes collecting evidence from trusting all evidence equally. The final judgment should name a specific clue or clue combination and explain why the unreliable witness deserves less weight. Support & extension

Support:
Use a three-column table: CLUE / WHAT IT SUPPORTS / TRUST IT? Complete one row together before students continue. Extension: Ask whether an unreliable source can still provide one useful detail, and require a text-based reason.
