- Focus:
- A bedtime routine, for machines
- Teacher direction:
- Ask the class what they do to get ready for bed, in order. Keep the list up: the book is going to do the same thing five times.
- Prepared text:

- I read the end of the crane truck's turn and the line after it. Notice the line after it is not part of the story - it is somebody speaking softly to the truck, the way you would to a child who is nearly asleep. It is printed in slanted letters, and it comes back every time.

- Work, then one last job, then bed
- Teacher direction:
- Using Passages 6, 11 and 13, write what happens to each truck.

- Expected answer:
- Each truck works all day, does one last job, then puts itself to bed with its own parts. The dump truck lowers its bed and locks its gate, rests its wheels, dims its lights, shuts its doors, and its engine slows into snores. Then the soft line comes, saying goodnight to that truck by name. Five trucks, five turns, and the same soft line after every one.
