Focus:

An argument every class already knows

Teacher direction:

Ask the class whether they have a favourite colour, and whether a grown-up has ever said no to it. Then read only the first line of the book.

I read one page and notice it has four parts, every time. She says which red thing she likes best. Her mother says something sensible about a different one. Then she gives her own reason. Then she says the first line again, unchanged.

Teacher direction:

Using Passages 2 and 5, write what her mother says and what she says back.

Expected answer:

About the jacket, her mother says she needs the blue one because it is too cold out for the red - and she answers with a question: how can she be Red Riding Hood in a blue jacket. About the pyjamas, her mother says the yellow ones will keep her warm when she kicks off her blankets - and she says the red ones keep the monsters away while she is asleep. Both mothers' reasons are about being warm. Neither of hers is.
