- A page that is a warning
- Teacher direction:
- Read the page that is only a sound, three times over in big letters. Ask the class what it means is about to happen. By the third time in the book they will know.

- I read the sound page and then the question page, and I point out that the question page is the same picture as the first time, printed again. The book is not just repeating the words. It is repeating the picture too, so the page itself tells me we are going round again.

- Sound, question, refusal, invitation
- Teacher direction:
- Using Passages 13, 21 and 38, write the steps that happen every time somebody new comes to the bridge.
- Expected answer:
- First comes the sound of somebody on the bridge, printed big. Then the Troll shouts his question, wanting to know who is crossing. Then the new arrival says who they are, and the Troll turns them down because they cannot pay. Then one of the billies calls out an invitation to join them, and the new arrival climbs in - Baby Bear asks for his water wings, and later Billy Bo tells Jack to put his two cents in over here. Then it all begins again with the sound.
