30 minutes Distinguish an offer, a request, and a thank-you response in dialogue. A correctly performed three-line dialogue using all three speech purposes. Essential question: How can you tell whether a speaker is requesting help, offering help, or giving thanks?

  • The book
  • OFFER, REQUEST, and THANKS cards
  • Dialogue cards Text to mark
  • Sign-making dialogue - characters request and offer help
  • Thank-you exchanges - characters respond to help

Lesson sequence

1 Listen - 5 min Read three brief exchanges from the book. Have students signal offer, request, or thanks. 2 Find clues - 7 min Have students notice words and punctuation that help reveal each speaker's purpose. 3 Sort - 7 min Sort the dialogue cards under OFFER, REQUEST, and THANKS.

Have students explain one choice. 4 Perform - 7 min Partners create and perform a three-line exchange: request, offer, thanks. 5 Close - 4 min Ask students to name one phrase that makes help sound respectful and clear.

Teacher key

“Could you help me make a sign?” is a request. “I can make another one.” is an offer. “Thank you for helping.” is thanks. Equivalent lines are acceptable when the purpose is clear. Support & extension

Support:
Use printed sentence starters and rehearse orally. Extension: Revise a command so it becomes a respectful request.
