- Four retelling strips Text to mark
- First three return passages - Robo Rat, secret sucker, then Ned and Nelly
- Ending - Albert says he does not want to read first after all
Prepared text “Here, Wanda,” Albert said as he came back. “I'll trade you Robo Rat for Captain Slime.
Deal?” “It's a secret sucker,” Albert explained proudly. “It's for sucking secrets out of other mice. I made it myself.” “I named them Ned and Nelly.” Albert looked at Captain Slime. “You know what, Wanda?” he said. “I don't want to read it first after all.”
Lesson sequence
1 Put the first three trips in order - 5 min Lay the first three excerpts left to right in the order Albert brought each thing in. Read each one aloud as it is placed, saying first, next, then. 2 Say what happened last - 4 min Read the ending excerpt. Have students retell in four sentences, touching one strip per sentence and using last for the ending.

A correct retell places Robo Rat first, the secret sucker next, Ned and Nelly then, and Albert's decision not to read first as the last event in this short route. Support & extension
