- Ace's question-and-answer exchanges across the mystery
- Questions that lead to useful evidence
- Questions that receive an answer but do not materially advance the case
Lesson sequence
1 Collect Ace's questions - 5 min Reread several of Ace's question-and-answer exchanges. Record the question and the answer without judging it yet. 2 Mark what helped - 5 min Return to the table.
Mark the questions whose answers actually uncover useful evidence and explain what evidence each one produced. 3 Compare the rest - 4 min Choose one answered question that did not help much.
Explain the difference between getting an answer and getting useful evidence. 4 Ask like a detective - 4 min Write two new questions that would help locate evidence in the case. Each question should name what kind of evidence the answer could reveal.
Teacher key
The lesson is about question quality, not simply question count. Strong answers identify which questions lead to evidence and create new questions designed to locate specific evidence. Support & extension
- Support:
- Provide the first two questions already copied into the table and ask students to complete only the answer and 'Did this help?' columns. Extension: Revise one weak question so that it would be more likely to uncover useful evidence.
