ABC Letters in the Library - Grade 1 - Short lesson

OBJECTIVE
20 minutes Read the whole alphabet through and work out that it is also one day in a library.
PRODUCT
Rows for the beginning, the middle and the end of the day, with a letter's line in each Essential question: Is this only an alphabet, or does something happen from beginning to end?

- Passage 5 - a librarian carrying a crate, two worried children at the desk
Lesson sequence
1 Before reading - 3 min
- Passage 12 - a child asleep in bed, an open book beside the pillow
- Focus:
- An expectation worth testing
- Teacher direction:
- Ask whether an alphabet book usually tells a story.
- Prepared text:
- Passage 1, Passage 2, Passage 5, Passage 12 2 Read it through - 10 min
- Focus:
- The shape of the whole thing
- Teacher model:
- Read the whole book through, letter by letter.
- Prepared text:
- Passage 1, Passage 2 3 First, middle and last - 7 min
- Teacher direction:
- Say what happens on the first page, choose one middle page that shows the library working, and say what happens on the last page.
- Expected answer:
- It opens with the aisles arranged; the middle shows the library at work, such as borrowing or shelving books; and it closes with a child asleep, so it runs from arriving to bedtime.
- Prepared text:
- Passage 1, Passage 5, Passage 12
