OBJECTIVE

15 minutes Use the punctuation at the bottom of a page to decide whether to stop reading or carry on over the turn.

PRODUCT

Boxes for the two halves of each sentence, joined, with the punctuation mark copied in Essential question: How do you know when a page ends but the sentence does not?

Materials

Text to mark

  • The book The four pages copied in order
  • Prepared passages: Passage 8, Passage 9, Passage 10, Passage 11, Passage 12
  • Passage 8 - a teacher with a finger to her lips, teenagers sprawled at a table
  • Passage 9 - a boy carrying a cardboard box of books
  • Passage 10 - a woman in red shelving books from a trolley
  • Passage 11 - families walking away from the library, books under their arms

Lesson sequence

1 Stop or keep going - 4 min

  • Passage 12 - a child asleep in bed, an open book beside the pillow
Focus:
Two marks, two instructions
Teacher model:
Read a page ending in a full stop and one ending in a comma.
Prepared text:
Passage 8, Passage 9 2 Join them up - 8 min
Teacher direction:
Write these two pages out as one sentence with the joining mark.
Expected answer:
One sentence: the donated books are what the volunteers then put into place. A comma joins the two halves.

Teacher direction:
Find the other place a sentence carries over the turn.
Expected answer:
The one about youngsters shuffling home, which finishes with pages becoming pillows.

Support & extension

Above: Explain why an author would split one sentence over a page turn instead of finishing it.

Below: Point at the mark at the end of each page and say stop or keep going.

Assessment

  • Names the comma as the reason for carrying on
  • Reads the two halves as one sentence
  • Notices the second page cannot start a sentence on its own
