- Passage 1 - a dog on newspapers beside a new blue bowl and a large cardboard box
- Passage 4 - a puppy in a blue blanket beside a grown dog's face
- Passage 9 - a dog curled asleep in the grass, a tennis ball at the edge of the page
Lesson sequence
1 Before reading - 5 min
- Passage 11 - a grown dog curled round a sleeping puppy, a tennis ball beside them
- Focus:
- A newcomer everybody looks at
- Teacher direction:
- Ask what it feels like when somebody new gets all the attention.

- Read the whole book, pausing to add three points to the chart: what Boomer notices at the start, how he feels when Baby gets the attention, and where Boomer ends up before Baby finds him.
