Lesson sequence

- Passage 13 - a face at the crack of a closet door, and a framed penguin on the wall behind
- Focus:
- An argument, prepared in advance
- Teacher direction:
- Ask the class what they do when they do not want their grown-ups to go out. Collect the answers. Then read the first list, which is the girl's opening argument.
- Prepared text:

- I look at the first page of her argument and notice she is standing on a chair holding up a drawing of a baby. She has not just thought of something to say - she has made a picture to prove it, and she is presenting it. Then I read her third scary thing, and the moose on that page is painted like a photograph in a book where everybody else is a cartoon. That is how seriously she means it.

- Teacher direction:
- Using Passages 2, 7 and 13, write down the different things the girl tries to stop her parents going out.
- Expected answer:
- First she argues: she is not a baby, she is a big kid, so she does not need a babysitter - and she has a drawing of a baby ready to hold up. When that fails she tries to frighten them with things that will happen if they go: a thunderstorm that will blow the house down, a tummy ache, and the biggest, baddest moose walking into the kitchen and eating her all up. The book says that did not scare her father at all. Then she goes into the closet and announces she has run away, and asks whether they miss her yet.
