Lesson sequence
1 Before reading - 3 min
- Passage 7 - four adults crowded in a doorway, one pointing
- Passage 8 - the boy asleep in an oval frame
- Focus:
- The routine the book is about
- Teacher direction:
- Ask what grown-ups always ask before a journey.
- Prepared text:
- Passage 2, Passage 4, Passage 7, Passage 8 2 Read it through - 9 min
- Focus:
- A pattern established in one round
- Teacher model:
- Read the whole book, stopping after the car to ask what will happen next time.

- Teacher direction:
- Fill in what Andrew answers each time and what breaks the pattern at the end.
- Expected answer:
- He always says no and then has to go - and the pattern breaks when he asks his grandpa the question instead.
