- Teacher direction:
- Look at the page where he hates it, with the words covered. How can you tell what he is thinking?

- I look at that page and the words are four short ones: Little Pea hated all of it. The picture says which it and how much: a thought bubble over his head with a sweet inside it, and a thick red circle drawn straight through that sweet.

- Words that name a colour, pictures that are it
- Teacher direction:
- Using Passages 8 and 10, write what the words name and what the pictures show.
- Expected answer:
- The words name a colour or a pattern for each day - red, orange, yellow, purple and pink polka-dotted - and the picture beside each one is a wrapped sweet drawn in exactly that colour, with the day's name hand-lettered in a matching shade and tilted at an angle. So a child who cannot yet read the word yellow can still tell you which day it is. On the hating page the picture goes further than the words, because the crossed-out sweet is a sign the class can read before they can read.
