- Look at any page with the words covered. What has the illustrator coloured in, and what has been left as a line drawing?

- I look at the barrettes page and notice who won. Her mother said pink barrettes go with a pink dress, and the picture has her in the pink dress - with red barrettes in her hair, eyes shut, grinning. The words never say she got her way. The picture does.

- Teacher direction:
- Using Passages 7 and 9, write what is coloured in these pictures and what is not.
- Expected answer:
- Almost everything is a line drawing - hair, faces, furniture, the floor - and the red things are filled in red. On the barrettes page the dress is a pale wash and the two clips are solid red. And the last picture makes the point completely: she is on the floor with paintings all round her, every one of them red, the jar of red paint nearly empty - and the smock she is wearing is the one large blue thing in the book. So the picture shows her dressed sensibly, the way her mother would like, and making red.
