Community & citizenship — five books, one act to one rule

Who keeps a place running, and what happens when nobody does.

five in sequenceGrades K–5TL03–TL08 where levelled13 min listening9 books in the collection

You are the teacher.

You know your students and what they need today.

Use what works. Change what doesn’t. Make it yours.

Citizenship taught as a vocabulary list stays a vocabulary list. This set builds it as a widening circle instead — one person doing one small thing, then a place that serves everyone, then two children who find a rule unfair and set out to get it changed. By the last book the class is looking at how a decision actually gets made.

The question that runs through all five

When something is wrong with a place, who is allowed to fix it?

Teaching this set

The order is a widening circle, and it is the whole teaching. One person, then many people, then a shared place, then a rule, then a rule changed. Read book 5 first and Yasmin's campaign is just a plot; read it last and the class already knows what a library is for and what a rule is trying to do.

What Matters and The Biggest Job of All are two minutes each. Either works as the way in on a short day, and What Matters rewards a second reading at the end.
